FAQs
What is cancer control?
Cancer control is an organised approach to reducing the burden of cancer. It includes prevention, screening and early detection, treatment, support and rehabilitation, palliative care, and surveillance and research.
What is the Cancer Control Council?
The Cancer Control Council is responsible for making sure New Zealand’s Cancer Control Strategy is turned into action. The Council is an independent advisory body appointed by the Minister of Health. We provide strategic advice directly to the Minister as well as to the wider cancer control community.
The Council works with all the bodies involved in controlling cancer. Together we are entrusted with reducing both the incidence and impact of cancer in New Zealand and the inequalities that surround it.
Who is on the Cancer Control Council?
The Council’s members are drawn from across the field of cancer control – from primary prevention, screening and early detection through to palliative care and research. Council members are appointed by the Minister of Health. The Chair of the Council is Dame Catherine Tizard.
What is the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy?
The New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy is a high level framework for reducing the incidence and impact of cancer in New Zealand and the inequalities that surround it.
The Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010 provides the detail of how the objectives of the Strategy will be achieved. It contains specific actions to be taken during the first five years (2005 - 2010), the results that need to be achieved and the key stakeholders involved.
The Cancer Control Council monitors and reviews progress made in achieving the goals of the Cancer Control Strategy and the specific actions in the Action Plan.
Why does New Zealand have a Cancer Control Strategy?
Cancer is a major health issue for New Zealanders. One in three will have some experience of cancer, whether personally or through a relative or friend. Cancer is the second leading cause of death and a major cause of hospitalisation in New Zealand.
New Zealand has developed the Cancer Control Strategy and Action Plan to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer and the inequalities that surround it.
Who is involved in cancer control?
Successful cancer control builds on co-operation between groups and organisations providing services across the field of cancer control. The Useful Links page takes you to the websites of key groups and organisations involved in cancer control. The Stories From the Field page tells the stories of what some of these groups are doing.
